As we head into a new season it’s time to update our skincare routines, so the experts at LOOKFANTASTIC spoke to Dr. Deborah Lee, Dr Fox Online Pharmacy to reveal this season's trending skincare ingredients that everyone should consider adding to their skincare routine. Rosehip The fruit of a rosebush, rosehip is an all round incredible ingredient for the skin. The natural ingredient contains vitamins A, C and E as well as fatty acids, making rosehip amazing for hydrating the skin and increasing radiance, as well as anti-aging benefits, such as increasing skin elasticity and firmness. Rosehip also helps reduce inflammation and combat visible UV damage. Rosehip is extremely nourishing for the skin and has recently seen 6.8 million views across the TikTok skincare community. Rosehip has hit the headlines with many happy customers enjoying the benefits. These include Kate Middleton, as well as many Reddit enthusiasts. Consultant dermatologists sing the praises of rosehip, whether this is the seed or the oil. Tranexamic Acid Searches for Tranexamic Acid have increased in popularity by 25% over the last year and its popularity is set to continue into the upcoming season. Tranexamic Acid stops pigment production which helps treat dark spots and hyperpigmentation and brightens skin. Tranexamic Acid is also popular on social media, for example it has 1.4 million views on the TikTok skincare community, with the likes of The Derm Doctor discussing the benefits of the ingredient for skincare. Topical tranexamic acid has shown promising results when used to reduce unwanted skin hyperpigmentation. Hyperpigmentation is a common problem in skincare, and topical use of tranexamic acid, until recently, was not recognized as a potential treatment. Tranexamic acid has recently become popular due to Instagram, the effects of various influencers, and the opinions of some Consultant dermatologists. It has been described as a ‘hero ingredient’ due to its potent skin properties. Mushroom Traditionally used in Chinese medicine, mushrooms have been experimented with for skincare for the last few years and are now beginning to be incorporated in skin lotions, creams, and ointments, with the popularity of the ingredient expected to take off this season. Mushrooms are high in antioxidants and metabolites that can help fight free radicals and protect against environmental damage. Skincare containing mushrooms will help brighten and hydrate skin, as well as fade dark spots and reduce inflammation. The fashion guru Vogue is also now promoting a range of mushroom-based skin products, which act as powerful antioxidants, assist the skin's barrier function, aid repair, and help prevent skin aging.” Pomegranate Another food-based ingredient, pomegranate, is becoming increasingly popular as an ingredient of skin care products, thanks to its antioxidant properties. Pomegranate contains polyphenols that help detox the skin from free radicals, protect against UV damage (post-exposure) and regenerate skin to prevent ageing. Pomegranates have many properties that lend themselves to skin protection. And everyone is talking about pomegranates! Dermatologists extol the virtues of topical application of pomegranate to the skin because they are rich in antioxidants, aid skin repair and regeneration, help protect the skin from sun damage, and have an anti-ageing effect to produce youthful, firmer-looking skin. Probiotics Microbiome skincare is one of this year's biggest trends. Microbiome friendly skincare nourishes the skin's natural bacteria which is responsible for immunity. Probiotics are key ingredients for caring for the skin's microbiome and they are good bacteria that help repair the barrier, restore healthy pH balance and improve the skin's natural immune response. Through doing so, probiotics reduce inflammation and build resilience to environmental stresses, overall contributing to happier, healthier, hydrated skin. There has been an incredible rise in interest in all products associated with the microbiome, which includes probiotics and prebiotics. With such enormous consumer interest, the probiotic skin market is predicted to grow by 12% between 2020-2030.
